How are therapists listed in the directory?
All listing are submitted by therapists themselves, with all information provided by them. The accuracy of information cannot be guaranteed and a therapist listed in this directory is not an endorsement of that therapist and their practices.
How much does it cost to join the directory?
It is absolutely free. In the future there may be paid options to help support the maintenance of the directory, but at it’s core, the directory will remain a free resource for the community.
What’s required for a therapist to join the directory?
To join the directory, a therapist has to submit their information through the Membership application and attest to not using AI / LLMs in their practice as a therapist. That’s it.
Is the information about a therapist’s choice to not use AI up to date?
If a therapist’s practice changes their policy around the use of AI, we do ask the therapist to update the directory, but there is not a way to enforce this. It is highly recommended that you validate the therapist’s current practices with regards to AI when contacting them.
Why the skepticism of AI?
There is increasing evidence of the harm that AI models and the companies running them are both enabling and committing, including devastating environmental impacts, increased risk and severity of psychosis, increased risk of completing suicide, increase in cognitive decline, reinforcing bias, spreading false information, and even blatantly lying to users. There are also increasing implications around lack of privacy protections when it comes to information shared with these AI models, as evidenced by a NY Times lawsuit exposing millions of ChatGPT conversation logs and OpenAI’s more recent shift towards flagging and reporting conversations to law enforcement. And while some AI services offer purported HIPAA compliance, many do not. A fundamental part of mental health support centers on the right to privacy and confidentiality (with very few exceptions, all centered around safety), and a commitment to social justice, which we believe AI at this time does not meet the standard of and have chosen to intentionally not use AI as it gains traction in virtually all fields.
But shouldn’t a therapist tell me if they’re using AI anyway?
Yes, they absolutely should. It should be discussed before your first session together, and you should sign a specific consent form around AI being utilized before or at the beginning of your first session. Any used of AI should also be HIPAA compliant. But there is a lack of ethical and legal guidance currently, as well as a lack of training around using AI as a therapist, so it is possible a therapist may be using AI without disclosing that they are or properly following ethical or legal considerations. The best thing you can do is to have a direct conversation with your therapist or potential therapist about the use of AI in their work.
For more information about the reality of and impact of therapists not disclosing their use of AI to clients, I recommend this September 2025 article in MIT Technology Review: Therapists are secretly using ChatGPT. Clients are triggered.
How often is the directory updated?
The directory is updated on the 15th and the last day of the month, with additional updates made as needed/time permitting.
When was the directory last updated?
December 03, 2025.
Why isn’t my country/state/province listed in the directory?
The directory is open to therapists anywhere in the world, so if we don’t currently have any listings for where you are located, that just means we haven’t received any membership requests from therapists there yet. As soon as we do, the directory will be updated accordingly.
Can you recommend a therapist to me?
Unfortunately, no, we can’t. This is simply a directory for therapists who share similar values and concerns around the use of AI in mental health care, and not an endorsement of any one therapist.
Who runs the directory?
Reid Lewis created this directory in August 2025 and is the only person currently managing it. They are an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and security consultant. This directory does not constitute therapy or security advice.
